Merlin Slash Awards!

Merlin Slash Awards
For Character Fiction and RPS

Friend the community for further updates!

We still need someone to help make a header, profile banner, and something that we can use to help pimp out the awards, so please comment or PM me to let me know if you can make something for us.

I have some questions I'd like to run past you lot about awards for the Merlin slash fandom in general, so I would love it if you could take a few seconds to fill out this poll.

FIRST QUESTION: Encompassing means that we would include not only the Merlin/Arthur slash pairing, but ALL slash and femslash pairings.

LAST QUESTION: Clarification: "If a fanwork has won in a category in the previous rounds of awards, should it be eligible to be nominated again in the same category in any subsequent rounds?" Said work could be eligible for another category and the creator of that work could be eligible for the same category with another work.

Poll #1557037 Merlin Awards

Would you be interested in an encompassing Merlin slash award community?

Other, reply in comments

Should the awards include all fanworks every time it runs? (fanfiction, fanvids, fanart, fanmixes, etc.)

Hold separate awards for fanfiction, videos, fanart, etc.
Other, reply in comments

How many times a year should the community hold awards?

More than 4

Should winners of previous awards be able to win again in the same categories?

Other, reply in comments

Also, please pimp this post out amongst your friends and communities so that we can see if the interest is great enough to go ahead! If you are interested in helping me out, I will need co-mods, so please comment or PM me if you are interested in helping!

I wasn't sure what was meant by the last question, and I think my answer is complicated enough to qualify as Other anyway. :-P

I'd vote that whatever the prize goes to should not be eligible to win again. Meaning, if a fic wins a fic award, it isn't eligible to win another award for being a good fic. If an author wins Best Author, they shouldn't be eligible to win an author-related award (like Best Author) again. But if the same author writes two different fics, and those fics are nominated for Best Fic in different years, more power to them.

Admittedly, that's really complicated and might be hard to work with. But that's just my two cents.

Your answer is what I meant exactly. I would rather that a fic that has one in a certain category not win in that category again since there are so many works written all the time and I would like everyone to have a chance to shine (and the same fic winning over and over again really isn't that fun, is it?)

Can you change your answer to "No" if you get a chance? Makes it easier on me to look and see what is more the popular opinion.

You can change your answer here: http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=1557037&mode=enter

contact the merlin_tv, bradleycolin, merlinxarthur & ontd_merlin mods I think those 4 are quite active even if 2 of them are about cm&bj and their characters; it will give you many 'views' and thus more people to vote.

Yeah, that was my plan! Thank you, me-dear.

That also brought up the question of RPF and if we should include RPF or if we should hold separate awards for fictional and real person works. Hmmm.

do it by categories. Best M/A fic; Best slash fic (not M/A); best HET fic; best femmeslash fic; best rpf fic. <- although i say that but if there's 'many' entries for a specific pairing maybe creating a category for that one since it means the pairing is big enough in fandom to deserve it. & that way people can put up for voting, read and also vote for those type of fics they read and not need to 'jump' over those fics that 'squick' them out or they simply don't like due to pairing and be more fair in their category since there's a higher chance they will read all the fics in that category they want.

It might mean you will get very few votes in certain less common categories thus why you will have to decide how many is enough to qualify as specific category.

I don't mind encoding html or making banners (although there are far more talented people than me) for you but I'm not big on fic reading so I don't think I would be really good as mod since I wouldn't be *that* interested in the fics XD

IDG the last question...

but um yeah, post this to ontd_merlin and other places and I'll repost in my lj 'cause I loves ya <3

Lemme know if you need any help. All these fandomy things happening all over the place.

Do you understand the last question yet? I tried to re-write it to clarify: "If a fanwork has won in a category in the last round of awards, should it be eligible to be nominated again in the same category in any subsequent rounds?"

If you get a chance to change your answer once you know which you would like--or if you have a more complicated answer, feel free to reply again. :)

And thank you for the pimping. I can't do much until I get permission to post in the comms. Blah!

Oh, I'm going to say no, unless it's a WIP. Especially considering that I thikn the awards should be done twice a year. That should divide it up enough so that the fanworks are fresher in people's minds and stuff.
Apr. 27th, 2010 09:26 pm (UTC)
I think any more than two awards a year is overkill.

And for the last question, I don't think they should be allowed to be nominated for the same category for the same piece of work again, ever. So if Prisoner of Azkaban won in the Best Prison Book category this year, it shouldn't be eligible to win in that category for any other year as well. But if PoA wants to enter in for Best Patronus Scene two years from now, it can because it hasn't won in that category.

I just don't want the same work to win every time or even multiple times. It won once, so obviously it's good. Does it really need to win again? No.

I agree--that was my opinion on the matter.

Should winners of previous awards be able to win again in the same categories?

I voted no because I thought you meant with the same entry. I don't see why people couldn't apply to the same category with something new the next time around. Their creative talents may have gotten awesome-r in that time.
Apr. 27th, 2010 09:54 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah, they can. I mean with the same entry. I mean one specific fanwork in one specific category.

It doesn't mean that the same creator can't have something else turn up in that category again or that that work can't be submitted for another category.
Apr. 27th, 2010 11:13 pm (UTC)
Yeah the last question got me for a minute but on re reading the top you did explain it fairly well. As long as its not the same fic in the same category I think its fine to win more than once. Im no good at art or banners etc, but I love the fandom and fics of any kind so Id be willing to help out if need be. Good luck! x

Thanks for the offer of help! Any and all pimping in your own journal will be a huge help and I hope to see you nominating! We're very excited about this!

On that last one, I wasn't sure if you meant an author would then be barred from winning in that category, period, or just that one work of theirs. I am wholly in agreement with the later and flip back and forth on the former, but I think there might be some merit to the argument that, okay, you don't want one author winning Best Angst or something 5 awards in a row. But natural fandom selection might just take care of that too.
Apr. 28th, 2010 09:17 pm (UTC)
No, the author would not be barred from winning in it again, only the work itself. An author can be nominated in the same category more than once with different works.

Hopefully we won't have the same author winning the same categories every time, but it is possible that some authors only enjoy writing certain types of fic and we can't deny them winning in it just because they are awesome at it!

I like to consider things from the standpoint of the fic itself and not the author, though we also don't want 5,000 M/A fics from malover456 being nominated and taking over everything either. I think I and my co-mod came up with a good solution for that problem. You can check out some of the stuff we've already decided on in our FAQ. We'll be adding to it as things progress.

Thanks for your interest! ♥

I'm just glad to have awards at all, so thanks for taking the time to do this <3

With regards to the last question I think that the same fic cannot be reentered for that round of voting, another fic by the same author is no problem.
